Vegan Beer-Battered Onion Rings
Ingredients
vegetable oil for frying
Batter
1½ cups flour
2½ tbsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp paprika
1½ cups cold beer (darker is preferred)
Dredge
1 cup flour
½ tsp salt
Recipe
1. Prepare Onions: Lay the onion on its rounded side and slice it into 1/4 inch round pieces. Separate the onion slices to obtain the individual rings.2. Heat Oil: Start heating an inch of oil in a deep pan on the stove, bringing it to a temperature of 350°F (177°C).
3. Prepare Batter and Dredge: In a mixing bowl, combine the ingredients for the batter, ensuring they are well incorporated. In a flat dish, such as a pie dish, combine the ingredients for the dredge, mixing them thoroughly.
4. Coat Onion Rings: Take an onion ring and coat it evenly in the dredge mixture, ensuring it's well-covered. Using a fork, dip the dredged onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is thoroughly coated on all sides.
5. Fry Onion Rings: Carefully place the battered onion ring into the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding the pan. Repeat the process with additional onion rings, frying them in batches as needed. Fry the onion rings for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
6. Drain and Season: Once fried, transfer the cooked onion rings to a cooling rack or a baking sheet lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. While still warm, sprinkle the onion rings with salt to taste, enhancing their flavor.
7. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the crispy onion rings hot, accompanied by your favorite vegan dip for dipping. Enjoy these delicious homemade onion rings as a tasty snack or side dish for any occasion!
